As the annual day of cannabis celebration, participation, and reflection draws near, you’ll find no shortage of 4/20 activities and observances happening throughout the United States. In fact, the number of events continues to grow as more states recognize the benefits of legalization – Massachusetts and Michigan are among those joining the parade this year.
The origins of 4/20 have been well documented, yet it’s widely recognized throughout cannabis culture that the day itself is not just about consumption. Much like any other holiday or observance, it is a day to celebrate and educate people about cannabis. That’s why we’ve collected a diverse lineup of events to feature in our first Indus Guide to Celebrating 4/20. The following list is comprised of activities and gatherings in states where recreational cannabis is legal and regulated.
The Best 4/20 Celebrations in 2019
Pilot Touhill’s 420 Alaska Tour
Billed as a tour of “Alaska’s rich green culture,” this two-night cannabis celebration will see guests partying from April 19-20. It kicks off at the Blue Loon, a comedy/music/movies venue known as the city’s cultural epicenter. Night two will be held at Koot’s in Anchorage. Pre-sale tickets are $12 and General Admission tickets are $15.
Magic Bus Experience
As one of the country’s most cannabis-friendly states, you don’t have to look far to find a 4/20 event. This year, we’re getting a ticket for the Magic Bus Experience, billed as Los Angeles’ only multi-sensory 4/20 holiday party and a “Toker’s Playground.” The Magic Bus Experience will be held April 19-20 at the historic Globe Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. This year’s lineup of attractions include a giant homemade pillow fort, “Human” robots, an Alice in Wonderland themed black light mini-golf course, live music, karaoke, and… wait for it… unlimited tater tots. General Admission tickets are $35, but be warned, you have to upgrade to the “Munchies Package” to get into the Unlimited Tater Tot Bar.
4th Annual 420 Weekend Extravaganja
Cannabis culture owes much of its progress to Colorado’s progressive stance, and, like California, the state knows how to celebrate 4/20. This year, the annual “Weekend Extravaganja” is taking over Denver’s famed Studio 420 members-only club from April 19-21. A “secret” musical guest is scheduled to perform during the party. Tickets are $30 for daily access, $100 for VIP (which includes a swag bag and more), and $250 for a three-day pass.
Waldos Forever Fest
Taking place for its second year in a row, this festival is anticipated to attract about 3,000 people and will feature food trucks and entertainment. Enjoy music from the likes of Big Freedia, White Mystery, Air Credits and more and comedy from Maureen Sandiego and Rachel Relman. The fest will unfold in Andersonville, right outside Chicago’s fabulous Dispensary33, providing a full day of music, education and fun for cannabis lovers – and anyone that loves a good time. Admission is free and restricted to ages 18+.
CatchVibe 420 Dance Party: Benefit to End Child Hunger
You can celebrate 4/20 and help a good cause in newly legalized Maine this year, as Newcastle’s Oysterhead Lounge hosts reggae group CatchVibe. It’s a $5 suggested donation at the door, with all of the money going to local school meal programs.
“How to Enter the Cannabis Industry” Online Event
Massachusetts is also new to the legal scene, and while they’re will be plenty of smoking and consuming, we thought we’d highlight an educational event for those seeking work in the cannabis industry. This “virtual experiential learning webinar” will examine the state of the industry and the current opportunities for job seekers. Registration is free, and once you’re confirmed you’ll find out more about the guests participating and the topics the webinar will cover.
420 Cannabis and Hemp Expo
Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mt. Pleasant is hosting this 4/20 convention featuring must-see exhibitors and appearances by industry leaders. Presentations scheduled throughout the day include: Owning a Cannabis Business; State and Federal Cannabis Laws; Breast Cancer and Cannabis; and Terpenes and Breeding. Best of all, admission is free.
The+Source Block Party
Nevada will celebrate its second legal 4/20 this year, and “Best of Las Vegas” award-winning dispensary The+Source will mark the occasion with a block party at its Rainbow Boulevard location. There will be product specials and a slew of entertainment options, including live paintings, a live ice-sculpting presentation by sculpting entertainer Vegas Iceman, breakdancing by artist and magician Ricardo Arts; and live music throughout the day from DJ Relaps, New Age Tribe, Mike Xavier, Daze, DJ Mikey VIP, DJ Smoke, EDOC, Indigo Kid and B2Beats. Best of all, the party never ends in Las Vegas!
Spliff Film Festival
This touring “Made by the stoned, for the stoned” film festival makes a stop in Portland on 4/20, bringing a collection of cannabis-themed original film shorts. This year’s crop of films include Bibbel the Dwarf Dwarf, Witch Weed, Munchies Massacre, and Bagel Bite Fright Night. Journalist, author, and pundit Dan Savage hosts two screenings at Revolution Hall.
3rd Annual 420 Party w/Cirque de Fuego, Disco Phantom
Any party featuring a DJ named Disco Phantom is worth checking out. Waterbury Center’s ZenBarn hosts this 4/20 celebration, with a suggested entry fee of $10 per person or $25 for a family of four.
Cheech & Chong at Emerald Queen Casino
In case you were wondering where these two pot pioneers were spending their 4/20, Grammy winners Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong will bring their legendary music and comedy to Tacoma’s Emerald Queen Casino. Finding a ticket won’t be an easy feet, you’re best bet is to check the secondary market. If that fails, at least you can chill out at home with Up in Smoke or Big Bambu.
